Frequently Asked Questions

Straight answers to the residential electrical questions we hear most — from GFCI outlets and tripping breakers to panel upgrades and home safety.

Why does my GFCI outlet keep tripping?+

A GFCI (Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter) trips when it detects current leaking to ground — its job is to protect you from shock. Frequent tripping can be caused by a faulty appliance plugged in, moisture in the outlet box, a wiring fault, or an aging GFCI that needs replacement. If resetting doesn't hold, it's worth having it inspected before assuming it's a nuisance trip.

Where am I required to have GFCI protection?+

Code requires GFCI protection in areas where water and electricity can meet — kitchens, bathrooms, laundry rooms, garages, unfinished basements, crawl spaces, and all exterior outlets. If your older home is missing GFCI protection in these spots, we can add it to bring you up to current safety standards.

Why do my breakers keep tripping?+

A breaker trips to protect the circuit from overload, a short circuit, or a ground fault. Most often it's simply too many high-draw devices on one circuit. If a breaker trips repeatedly even with a light load, it can signal a wiring problem or a failing breaker — both worth a professional diagnosis rather than just resetting it again.

Do I need an electrical panel upgrade?+

Common signs you've outgrown your panel include frequent breaker trips, flickering lights, a panel that's warm to the touch, reliance on extension cords, or an older 60–100 amp service. Most modern homes benefit from a 200 amp panel, especially if you're adding an EV charger, hot tub, AC, or major appliances. We can evaluate your current capacity and recommend the right upgrade.

What does a panel upgrade involve?+

We coordinate with the utility, install a new panel and breakers sized for your home's needs, re-land your circuits, and ensure everything is properly grounded and labeled. The work is permitted and inspected for safety. Most residential panel upgrades are completed in a single day.

My lights flicker or dim — should I be worried?+

Occasional dimming when a large appliance kicks on can be normal, but persistent flickering across the home can point to loose connections, an overloaded circuit, or service issues. Because loose connections can become a fire hazard, persistent flickering is something we recommend having checked promptly.

Are my outlets and wiring safe in an older home?+

Older homes may have ungrounded two-prong outlets, aluminum wiring, or outdated panels that no longer meet code. We offer safety inspections to identify hazards and prioritize upgrades — grounded outlets, GFCI/AFCI protection, and panel improvements — so your home is safe and up to date.
